How often does a car need an oil change?

Start with your logbook. The car's maker sets the interval for your engine.

If you don't have the book, AutoGuru's rule of thumb is every 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first. Hard use shortens that. For constant stop-start driving, towing or sustained high speeds, it suggests every 5,000 km or 3 months.

Time counts as well as distance. Oil ages even in a car that is not driven much.

• Fuel economy has dropped
• A service reminder is showing on the dashboard
• You have reached the interval in your logbook

An oil warning light is different. It means stop, check the oil level and call.

Some drive-through outlets advertise a 10 minute or 30 minute oil change. You drive there and wait while it is done.

Ours takes about an hour, because it is more than a drain and refill. The filter is replaced, the fluid levels, belts, hoses and battery are checked, the engine is inspected for leaks and the service reminder is reset.

The right oil is the one your owner's manual lists, including the viscosity. We use the grade and specification your car's maker recommends, so you don't have to work it out.

Engine oil leak repair in Melbourne

Every oil change includes a leak inspection. If there is oil on your driveway, these are the usual sources:
