On the 1.8 and 2.0 litre TSI petrol engines fitted to models such as the Golf GTI, Jetta, Audi A4 and Q5, the water pump and thermostat are bolted together as one module on the front of the engine block. The seals in that module are a known leak point.

On many engines it is, and that changes the job.

Belt maker Gates says a timing belt-driven water pump should always be replaced at the same time as the timing belt. An old pump left behind a new belt may fail within 20,000 to 30,000 km, and the same labour then has to be paid for twice.
